y Sunday for seven weeks before Easter and ends on the seventh Sunday, Pentecost, differing from location to location within the island.

The Cultural Week of Velas blends traditional ethnography with new cultural events coming from outside. During this week you have concerts, conferences and exhibitions of outstanding figures of Azores culture, a boat race and a taurine fair.

During the July Festival, in Calheta, attend ethnographic shows, musicals, theater performances, exhibitions and sports tournaments.

Religious festivals  (romarias) are also a tradition of the island of São Jorge, deeply linked to the belief of divine intervention against the force of the Volcanoes and Earthquakes. The main festivals are: Nossa Senhora do Carmo, in Faja dos Vimes on July 16 of each year and the Romaria of Santo Cristo dos Milagres, on the first sunday of September, in Faja da Caldeira de Santo Cristo.
